epals

Last march I joined Eunice Sari's seminars about Unlocking students' curiosity in learning, and I found out that the idea of connecting classroom might be a good idea. It is really nice. Now my students have collaboration with 6 classes in the world. They are  from UKrainia,  Maine, Greece, Hollywood, China and Washington.  They are very happy with it. They send email each other and learning about culture, food, art, school life and many other things. I can make my students practice reading and writing all the same time. Then they have to make presentation about their epals information/emails.
I only sign up and make my classroom profile, and then it was approved by the epals support.
At first, It seems complicated, but later on I find out it is simple.

Thanks epals for connecting us to the world outside

Last February I tried to rewrite a legend of Pasuruan, one of many version of the stories.  The one who wrote in Indonesian is a teacher from SMKN 2 Pasuruan, mr. Ali Imron . My student,Gaung Aidaferti Zelina C.H,  told this story in a competition. She did a good job. She won. Wanna read it! check this out!

The Legend of Pasuruan
Rewritten by -Etik Wahyuni

Long-long time ago, there was born a baby boy, named Untung Suropati. His father passed away when his mother pregnant. His grandmother named him “Untung Suropati’’ in order that he would always be Lucky in his life. “Untung” is a Javanese language which means lucky.

When he was a teenager, her mother often said “ Untung, remember you must be a brave and  a good person. Your father was dead because he struggled for this country. The Dutch had made us lived in misery. Please struggle for our independence from Ducth”
Untung replied:” Yes mom, I will train my self defense. I promise.
Each time her mother encouraged him, and his spirit became higher and higher. He really loved and respected his mother
But when he was 15 years old, his mother passed away.
He was then raised by a Dutch family. He lived in a sufficient life. He was given good clothes, good food and money.  But this could not buy his “ soul”.
He hated the Dutch very much. At first, he didn’t show it but when the time went by, he could not stand it. He started showing his courage.
Knowing this, the Dutch put him in prison. This happened many times,
In the jail, Untung burnt his friend’s spirit and encourage them to struggle. The soul of hero was getting bigger and bigger.
“ Friends, we have been living in misery because of the Dutch. So we must struggle from this damn jail to get rid of them from our country”
“ Agree”    I agree “ I agree” His friends said
“ Let’s run away from this jail”
Then they set up plan and strategy to get out of the prison. They made noise and the Dutch jail officers came to check. At that time they were successful to beat them they took the key and “ crek –crek “ they are free from the jail.
They wanted to run away to Mataram. On the way, they kept thinking the strategy to fight against the Dutch. They found a great place to hide, a dense bamboo forest, this put the Ducth in difficulty to arrest them. From this place Untung built his troop, set up strategy and then attacked the Dutch, they took guns, sword, and others weapons, then hid again in the forest. They did it many times they never surrender to struggle.

When the Dutch knew this, they tried to chase Untung Suropati and His friends. They asked the local people, but no one tell them. The people kept silent even though they were threatened by the Dutch.

Many people were killed because of this. Then finally they knew it. “ the Bamboo forest”
Every time they tried to arrest them they could not do it because the forest is very hard to trespass. Then they enforced all their troops to that area. After a tiring walk they could reach the area. But still they couldn’t. They had spent months there and they had lost many soldiers.

Then the Dutch had an idea.

“Let’s make use of the villager’s poverty” Prepare a ton of coins” we will see the effect.

They prepared many gunnysacks of coins. They spread the money in many places in the forest. The light of the coins attracted the villagers to come. They were afraid to take it, they asked to the officers
“ Can we take the money , sir! Asked the villager
“ It’s ok. The money is for all of you” Please take all but you must cut the bamboo trees first”
“ Wow, That’s great. Let’s cut it”
“ OK” OK” replied all villagers. They were very happy and then they cut the bamboo trees until they could find much many.
Oh, “ Pasar Uang”  Pasar Uang” much money here . come on let’s take as much as possible” said the villagers.

They didn’t realized that the action made Untung Suropati and his soldiers easy to catch. The Dutch then cought Untung Suropati.

Because of that happening people named the place “ Pasuruan” from Pasar Uang . And  to commemorate the name of Untung Suropati, it  becomes the name of a street, a building, and a school in Pasuruan

My city, Pasuruan is very rich of  stories. People know many legends, myth, folktales, etc. Here is one of the legend of a place in Pasuruan.

THE LEGEND OF TEGALARUM
Once upon a time, there was a kingdom where its people lived peacefully and never found difficulty to fulfill their daily needs because the king, Jati Pati, governed his people with care and wisdom. Everything they needed were always given by the king for their prosperity and welfare. His people liked him so much.
He had two daughters with similar characters. That is wise , hospitable, and helpful. The older one was Demi Padmi and the younger one was Dewi Arum.
Dewi Padmi was an unfortunate girl because she was sick. The disease was hard to be healed. Her parents did everything, but failed. The diseases wa given by Mak Bayong, an ugly evil witch. Dewi Padmi would be healthy if the king gave Dewi Arum to the witch. She wanted her because Dewi Arum was protected by the power of God.
There was a saying” the one that could kill the witch is Dewi Arum”. She didnt want it happen.
One night the witch came to the palace and appeared in front of the   King Jati Pati’s bedroom window.  She said “ Hiiiiii hi hii hi Jati Pati.I want to remind you the next full moon,  you should submit your last child. Unless I will kill Dewi Padmi and your people. “
The King was afraid and said ”Please heal my daughter and get away from my younger daughter. Take my Kingdom if you want. ”
The Witch Replied “ Hi ...hi I dont need your  Kingdom, Foolish King! I just need your youngest dauhter and I become the King of the Darkness. Dont forget! Next Month Full moon!” Then the wicth dissapeared in the dark night.
The king could not sleep thinking of how he could handle this matter. He was in dilema. He loved both of his daughters. He could not give her daughter  to free another daughter. After that night he looked so upset.
Dewi Arum  Asked” Why you look so pale and sad, father? Anything that I can help? “
The question broke the King’s thought. He could not say a word. He didn’t want to hurt his daughter feeling. So he just kept silent.
“Father, tell me? Why are you dissapointed? “Dewi arum urged her father.
“Last..last night the witch came by, She reminded me to give you if we want Padmi to be healthy again. I can’t do that because I love both of you.” The king said in a sad voice.
Then Dewi Arum said ”Father, if it is the God destiny, I am ready to sacrifice. If I must die, it is the God willingness.
“No ..no my daughter. I can sacrifice myself but not you and your sister,” said the King
“ Believe me father. If it is good for the people, The God will help us” Dewi Arum replied.
The king burst into tears. They hugged so tightly like nothing could separate them.
……………………………………………………………
Day passed so speedily. When the night came, the King and his people were very frightened. It was the fullmoon and the King had to give Dewi Arum. The witch came and the people tried to haul the evil but they are too weak to fight.
“ Hi hi hi hi…………The evil witch’s sound frightened the King and his people. “ Hii hii hii …..the foolish King. Give me your daughter , Dewi Arum. If you don’t give her to me. I’ll burn down this region. .. hi hi hi hi hi.” Said the witch.
The king was worried and did nothing. But Dewi Arum smiled. She was not afraid at all.
“ father don’t be sad. I approach the God destiny. Be sure, the God will help me” Dewi Arum said.
Not long after that, The witch took Dewi Arum away with her broom. They landed on a garden not far from the palace. The garden was ugly as if there were no life.  The witch then took a sword and was ready to kill Dewi Arum.
“ Dewi Arum, Finally I could get you. The God was false to create you smart and powerful. I can beat you hi hi hi hi. What is your last word!”
“ I just want to say. I die not because of you but it is God’s destiny. He decided everything“ Dewi Arum said bravely.
“ Go to hell with your god. I don’t believe in God. Don’t say about that in front of me hi hi hi….”
Then the witch swung her sword to Dewi Arum’s neck. Blood splashed everywhere. The flower sprang all over the garden. They were very fragrant. The witch could not stand the fragrant.
“ Help … help me I can’t stand with this fragrance. I cant breath ……”the witch screamed and then she died.
From this fragrance came out Dewi Arum. She was saved by the God. Then she went back to the palace . The King, Dewi Padmi and the people were happy to see her home savely.
From the happening, this region was called TEGAL ARUM. Tegal is Javanese tern for garden or farm and Arum means fragrant. So tegal Arum which is located near SMPN 1 Pasuruan means fragrant garden.
